Valuations

Auction valuation guidance (free)
If you’re considering selling an item at auction, we’re very happy to provide auction valuation guidance to help you decide whether auction is the right route.
-
Cost: Free of charge
-
How it works: In most cases we can give initial guidance from clear photographs and a brief description.
-
What to send: overall images, close-ups of any marks or hallmarks, measurements where relevant, and any provenance or paperwork.
You can upload photographs and details using our Contact Us page or email us at [email protected].
Please note: all items should be discussed and agreed with a member of the Wincanton Auctions team before they are brought in, to avoid any wasted journey.
Jewellery valuation reports (insurance / probate / asset division)
We provide formal written valuation reports for jewellery where documentation is required for insurance, probate, or family asset division.
Fees
-
Report preparation + first standard item: £60 + VAT
-
Additional standard items: £35 + VAT per item
-
Non-standard item (first): £90 + VAT
-
Additional non-standard items: £55 + VAT per item
Standard items are simple gold or silver pieces. More complex, antique, designer, or diamond jewellery is classed as non-standard.
To begin, please upload photographs and details via our Contact Us page. A member of our team will confirm the classification and next steps before proceeding.
Insurance valuations (home visits / larger groups)
For insurance valuations involving multiple items or house contents, we can provide a formal written valuation following inspection.
-
Fee: £100 + VAT per hour (base + time spent)
-
Travel by agreement
- In our experience, most home valuation visits are completed within around 2–3 hours, depending on the size and complexity of the property and contents
Where suitable items are later consigned for sale with us, valuation fees may be offset against sale proceeds by agreement.
Probate valuations
We offer a professional and discreet probate valuation service for executors and solicitors.
-
Valuations reflect open market value at the date of death
-
Written schedules suitable for probate and HMRC
-
Fees follow the same structure as above
Please contact us with a brief outline of the estate and location, or upload photographs via our Contact Us page.
