19th Century Continental School Oil on Canvas Portrait of a Seated Lady

An accomplished 19th century oil on canvas portrait depicting a seated lady in mourning attire, believed to be of Continental European origin. The subject is shown in a three-quarter pose, dressed in a high-necked black gown with lace trim and gold jewellery, including earrings and a pendant necklace. She holds a single pink rose in one hand and is seated beside a small table draped with an ornate textile, upon which rests an open book—possibly a Bible—suggesting piety or remembrance.

The background includes a window view of a twilight landscape, adding both depth and symbolic atmosphere to the composition. The artist has rendered the facial features with particular sensitivity, capturing a calm and reflective expression.

The canvas measures approximately 86cm x 122cm and is presented unframed. The work exhibits areas of wear consistent with age, including losses to the paint surface, notably one puncture to the right of the sitter’s head and a larger area under the subject's hands, minor abrasions, and edge scuffing.

A fine and atmospheric example of Victorian or Continental portraiture with considerable presence.
